Musician with a passion

Johannes Unger (born 1976) has been organist at St Mary's Church (St. Marien zu Lübeck) since 2009 and at Lübeck Cathedral (Dom zu Lübeck) since 2022.
He grew up in a musical family and studied piano, organ and church music in Leipzig and Copenhagen. His teachers included Ullrich Böhme, Hans Fagius and Markus Tomas. From 2003 to 2009, he was assistant organist at St Thomas Church in Leipzig. He attracted international attention when he won three major organ competitions in quick succession (Odense 1998, Leipzig Bach Competition 2000 and St. Albans 2001).


His main duties at St Mary's Church in Lübeck include concert and liturgical organ playing. He also directs the Capella St Marien, a choir and instrumental ensemble he founded in 2010. In 2010, he composed the "Seligpreisungen" (Beatitudes) for two organs, bass and female choir for the "Lübecker Abendmusiken" (Lübeck Evening Music) in memory of the Lübeck martyrs. He dedicates the annual "Buxtehude Days" in St Mary's Church, which have been held since 2010, to his famous predecessor Dieterich Buxtehude.


Concerts and courses take Johannes Unger to many countries in Europe, North America and Australia. He regularly makes recordings for radio and on CD. Until 2009, he taught at the University of Church Music in Halle. In 2009, he was appointed to a teaching position at the Lübeck University of Music (Musikhochschule Lübeck).
