Guided Tower and Vault Tours
The vault of the nave of St. Mary's is 38.50 meters high, making it the highest brick vault in the world. Visitors to the tower and vault tours can see the mighty vault caps from above. They stand under the huge roof and look through window hatches, open working doors and from the ridge turret over the old town and, on a clear day, as far as Travemünde, Mecklenburg and Holstein.
The way there leads up the stairs in the towers - past the carillon, mural crown and belfry.
The tour lasts a good two and a half hours and is filled with stories about the hard working conditions of our medieval ancestors, many of whom spent their entire lives working on this building. It is an encounter with the great intellectual, technical and physical achievements of people in the 13th and 14th centuries - and in the period of reconstruction after 1945.
Public Tower and Vault Tours
Please note that the public tours are usually conducted in German. Please let the guides know right before the start of the tour and they will be happy to accommodate your request for English translation if possible.
Otherwise you are welcome to book a private tour, in which case a guide in a foreign language can be requested in advance.
You can request private tours of the tower and vaults using the form below the calendar. (Note: The contact form is currently only available in German. We are working on an English version as soon as possible and apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.)
